2. Wineries & Bar Recommendations

  • The west side of Highway 101 in the Sta. Rita Hills (about 45 minutes north of Santa Barbara) has excellent Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A few wineries of note are Alma Rosa, Sea Smoke and Melville Winery.
  • The east side of Highway 101 in the Santa Ynez Valley (about 50 minutes north of Santa Barbara) has excellent Rhone-style wines, along with a select number of Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc.  Brander is an excellent choice.
  • The city of Santa Barbara has a number of tasting rooms and urban wineries that are fun to visit.  I would suggest visiting the Funk Zone and El Paseo (where Margerum winery has an excellent tasting room).

YPO Owned establishments:

Russian River Valley Recommendations

  • Kistler Vineyards
  • Fort Ross is amazing:)
  • Paul Hobbs Winery - is YPO Friendly, They do not have a walk-in visitor programme, however you may be able to call / email and get access at short notice. Paul produces outstanding wines which are highly rated and highly sought after / allocated.
Best Practice: At vineyards providing special access to YPO'ers, we recommend YPO'ers always purchase wine (a min of 6 bottles, preferably more if you like the wine!). This is a small recognition for wineries which open their doors for "only in YPO" access, acknowledging both the costs involved and the time taken from a work day by the Owner / CEO / Winemaker / Master blender / etc. to host visiting YPOers. This practice by prior YPO visitors has helped open these doors, and will help keep the doors open for those who follow.
